Call your health care provider for consultation on medications.
Painkillers (analgesics) are substances that give temporary relief from pain without causing a loss of consciousness. There are two major categories of painkillers: nonnarcotic and narcotic.
The most commonly used nonnarcotic painkillers are aspirin and other salicylates, acetaminophen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, which is available in both prescription and non prescription forms. Nonnarcotic painkillers are by far the most commonly used of all medications. In addition to controlling pain, these analgesic also lower fever and counter inflammation.
Narcotic painkillers include the opiates and opioids, which are natural or artificial forms of opium. Codeine, propoxyphene (e.g. Darvon and Wygesic), meperidine (Demerol), and morphine are common examples. These drugs are usually used on a short-term basis to control severe pain, such as the pain of cancer, a broken bone, or an operation.
Many prescription analgesics contain a combination of narcotic and nonnarcotic painkillers. Common combinations include acetaminophen and codeine (e.g. Tylenol and Tylox), aspirin and codeine (e.g. Empirin with Codeine), propoxyphene and aspirin (e,g. Darvon with A.S.A.); and aspirin, caffeine, and butalibital (Fiorinal). These drugs are used as an alternative to preparations that contain only narcotic ingredients for painful conditions that are not adequately alleviated by nonnarcotic agents. I hope this helps you. And good luck.

Flexeril is also a muscle relaxant–so it works directly on the ’cause’ of the pain.
Most serious dental pain needs a pain reliever along with an anti-inflammatory–such as Ibuprofen along with a narcotic (if something that strong is needed).
Tylenol works best for certain kinds of pain—and Ibuprofen works best for certain other types of pain.
As far as narcotics go–there are varying strengths, plus combinations with tylenol or aspirin or ibuprofen.
from years of experience, most doctors know what ‘usually’ works best.
There are other things that can be done to relieve the pain–or help to relieve the pain.
certain tension and migraine headaches benefit from sleep. So even benadryl may help because it is a sedative as well as an antihistamine.

Flexeril works as a muscle relaxer to alleviate pain. The bigger guns like Vicodin and Darvocet are intended for major or chronic pain in the body.
If the cause of pain is known, it’s best to treat it by eliminating this cause. For a pulled muscle, have you been in physical therapy, icing it or hot packing it?
I’m sure you know this already, but the use of these major pain meds over a long period of time can cause dependence and a host of other side effects. I think doctors tend to prescribe these meds based on the part of the body where the pain is. A good doctor will start with the least addictive med to the most – until good pain management can be achieved.
