Cancer Survivors Tell Moving Tales

June 20th, 2010
Phil Davies asked:

On the day her mammogram revealed her tumor, Linda Peters came home to some bittersweet news. A message from eBay revealed she had won a coveted hand-made quilt from the Quilt Pink project?a collaborative charity auction supporting the largest breast cancer awareness effort in the world. Since Quilt Pink was launched a year ago by American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Foundation, an astonishing 4,000 hand-made quilts have been submitted for auction on eBay. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have gone to Komen for the Cure®, and for every quilt made and donated to the cause, there is a woman with a stirring story.

In Cottage Grove Wisconsin, Tania Russow runs to her mailbox to retrieve the Quilt Pink quilt she’d worked on while undergoing chemotherapy. A stranger outbid her for it on eBay, but sent it back to Tania when she heard of its heart-rending origin. In Nashua New Hampshire, two teenagers die in a car crash and as their classmates mourn the loss, they complete the Quilt Pink project they started and submit it to eBay. In Steamboat Springs Colorado, a family is startled by the accidental discovery that someone they’ve never met has dedicated her Quilt Pink quilt to their mother, who unfortunately lost her battle with breast cancer. And in Kissimmee Florida, a healthy grandmother makes it her goal to buy as many Quilt Pink quilts as she can so that her daughter will live to become a grandmother.

Launched in September of 2006 on Quilt Pink Day, 1000 quilt shops across the country invited patrons to create and donate hand-made quilts to find a cure for breast cancer. The quilts are submitted to eBay and go up for auction with all proceeds sent to Komen for the Cure®. Neither the magazine nor the foundation anticipated that the number of donations would exceed what was expected – by nearly five times! Nor were they prepared for the touching events set in motion by the powerful connection Quilt Pink has forged among women of all ages, all walks of life, quilters and non-quilters alike – for a common cause.

“For the past 25 years, Komen for the Cure® has been on a mission to end breast cancer forever,” said Katrina McGhee, Vice-President of Marketing for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. “Programs such as Quilt Pink are an integral part of that mission, helping us to reach millions with life-saving breast health messages, and raising funds that support research and community outreach.

Every major advance in breast cancer research has been touched by a Komen for the Cure® grant, resulting in significant scientific breakthroughs and major cancer-fighting discoveries. Right now, celebrity quilts are on auction on ebay.com. To view and bid on these remarkable, one-of-a-kind quilts visit www.eBay.com/quiltpink

“The minute it sinks in that you’ve decided to give up a breast to save your life,” says Linda Peters, “well, that’s a very hard minute.” Today, Peters is cancer-free and has purchased 12 more Quilt Pink quilts for women recovering from breast cancer. “Sometimes,” said Peters, “things happen in your life – not necessarily for the lessons they hold for you – but so you can support someone else.”

His reward is a blushing mainstream entertainment that was tonight deemed fit to be introduced to polite society at a royal premiere in Leicester Square. Our reward is anyone’s guess.

The drama ushers us through the afterlife of Susie Salmon (Atonement’s Saoirse Ronan), a small-town kid in 1970s Pennsylvania who is killed by the local pervert (Stanley Tucci) and looks down on her scattered, shattered family from her place in limbo. She sees her mum (Rachel Weisz) flee the coop and her dad (Mark Wahlberg) come apart at the seams. From this celestial vantage, she starts to fear for the safety of her little sister (Rose McIver), whose jogging route leads her regularly past the killer’s suburban home.

It’s not that The Lovely Bones is a bad movie, exactly. It is handsomely made and strongly acted, while its woozy, lullaby ambience recalls Jackson’s work on the brilliant Heavenly Creatures, before he set forth on his epic voyage through The Lord of the Rings.

Here, he audaciously conjures up heaven as designed by a teenage girl – a kitsch spread of sunflower fields, spinning turntables and the sort of airbrushed waterfalls that could have spilled straight off an Athena poster. All of which is entirely fitting, and often captivating. The problem, though, is that The Lovely Bones also gives us a real world as designed by a teenage girl. The land that Susie leaves behind is so infested with cartoon archetypes and whimsical asides that, at times, it scarcely feels real at all.

Might the fault lie with the source novel? Alice Sebold’s best-selling book similarly held up Susie Salmon’s innocent fancies as a kind of talisman to ward off evil. It dared to spin a sentimental fantasy out of a grisly tragedy, offsetting the tang of sulphur with the sweet taste of candyfloss. The difference was that Sebold’s novel was not scared to look the central horror in the face. This ensured that it at least part earned its subsequent flights into the ether.

The screen version, by contrast, is so infuriatingly coy, and so desperate to preserve the modesty of its soulful victim that it amounts to an ongoing clean-up operation.

Gone is the dismembered body part that alerts the family to Susie’s fate. Gone is her anguished mother’s adulterous affair with the detective who leads the case. Gone is all mention of what really transpired in that lonely 1970s cornfield. Is this really the best way to secure a crime scene and retrieve the victim? Jackson turns up with his eyes averted, spraying cloying perfume to the left and right.

Low Back Pain

June 20th, 2010
Dr. Raj N. Sureja asked:

Low back affects 90% of Americans at some time in their lives. As many as 5% of Americans have back pain on any given day. As back pain may be a part of most of our lives, it is generally not debilitating. All of us have some activity that makes our backs sore. From gardening to athletics, activity that is out of our normal routines will force muscles to perform beyond their comfort zone. The activities that will make an individual’s back become painful will also change throughout life. Aging of the body and especially the degeneration of the intervertebral disc will decrease the body’s ability to tolerate specific activities. Even professional athletes will not be able to perform at the same level as they age. Most back pain will not lead you to becoming chronically disabled but can certainly alter your activity level for a short period of time.

Prevention is the key to long-term health of the spine. Getting into a generalized aerobic fitness program will keep the muscles and tendons flexible and strong in the lower back. Most fitness centers have excellent trainers that will be able to compose a fitness program to help with aerobic health. They should be able to design a program that will take into account any of your previous injuries and any medical problems. You should talk to your doctor if you have any major medical issues that affect your heart or lung capacity. Simple exercises for the back muscles may prevent most back pain. Fitness programs can also be designed for weight-loss. By decreasing your body weight, you will lessen the load on your back. Fewer pounds on your frame will also lead to less pressure on your discs as well as your hips, knees and ankles.

It has been shown that smokers have a higher percentage of back pain than non-smokers. Smoking cessation is also important to decreasing back pain in our population. Smoking decreases the oxygen levels in the blood which can damage the tissues that have less blood supply, which includes the discs in the spine.

For acute attacks of back pain, it is important to maintain as close to normal activity level as possible. In the past, physicians would tell patients with acute back pain to stay in bed for 3 days to allow the muscles in the back to rest. Further research has shown that muscle strains and sprains heal better with movement. Yes, you can overdo activity, so with a sore back, try to move as you would normally, but avoid activity or movements that are painful. This may leave you with very restricted movement for a few days, but the back pain should improve in 2-3 days.

Using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications will also help to relieve the irritation of the muscles and tendons in the lower back. Inflammation in the muscle and tendon complex will lead to pain and muscular spasms. The muscular spasms lead to some of the most severe pain in the back. Ice packs will also be helpful in decreasing inflammation in the lower back muscles and tendons. Heat is best used to warm stiff muscles which will occur as the inflammation and swelling decrease. Most patients will not need stronger pain medications than the over-the-counter medications.

These methods will help with the typical back pain. If your back pain persists for more than a week despite activity modification, anti-inflammatories and stretching, you should be seen by your doctor.
