Poliomyelitis causing loss of muscle function?

December 20th, 2010
NJTBL asked:

In patients with poliomyelitis, motor neurons are destroyed, causing loss of muscle function and even flaccid paralysis. Sometimes recovery occurs because of the formation of axon branches from the remaining motor neurons. These branches innervate the paralyzed muscle fibers to produce motor units with many more muscle fibers than usual, resulting in the recovery of muscle function. Explain what effect this reinnervation of muscle fibers would have on the degree of muscle control in a person who has recovered from poliomyelitis?

Where your consciousness is awakened just enough for you to witness that you can’t move a single muscle and the more you try, the more difficult it seems to become.
