Pain in the Ribs and Costochondritis

George McKenzie asked:

When there is a stabbing pain in the ribs, it is not always due of an injury. Instead, you may be suffering from a condition known as costochondritis, which is an irritation of the cartilage that connects the rib and the chest plate or sternum. This pain can scare you – it resembles angina, the type of chest pain you get from heart disease. It can also feel like a cracked or broken a rib.

Costochondritis is also known by several other names, including chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia.

What Can Cause Costochondritis?

The most likely reason you’d would have pain in the ribs from costochondritis is because of a blow to the chest. Sometimes you can also strain the cartilage by lifting improperly or something that weighs too much.

Another common cause of costochondritis is fibromyalgia. This is an arthritic condition that can occur in all areas of the body and can affect the top of the sternum too. Violent or persistent coughing can cause this as well as respiratory infections.

Costochondritis Symptoms

Discomfort in the area of the chest where the ribs are attached to the sternum is a typical indication of costochondritis.

There are two types of pain. The first is a stabbing pain in the chest. The other starts like an ache that becomes more intense. It is more common to feel this discomfort on the left side rather than the right side. Taking a breath can be uncomfortable or even painful and having to cough can cause intense pain.

Often, people who feel such severe ribcage pain think that they are suffering from a heart attack instead of costochondritis. The main difference is that angina (chest pain from heart disease) feels as if it’s coming from deep inside the chest, whereas costochondritis pain is more toward the outside.

Whenever there are chest pain issues, an immediate call to your is in order.

How to Treat Costochondritis

For the most part, this is going to heal on its own with time.

If the pain is exceptionally intense, you can ask for doctor to prescribe pain relievers and anti inflammatory drugs. Over the counter medications may also help if the pain is strong but not too severe.

Elizabeth asked:

if I am fourteen, have had no seizures, no muscle paralysis, or vomiting? The reason I ask is because I have an anxiety disorder and am a little bit of a hypochondriac. I have nausea, tingly hands and legs on occasion, spacey feeling in head, weird neck feelings that seem to lead up to my tongue, and most of all HEADACHES. They’ve never been excruciatingly painful, but they are constant, and occur in random places usually. Sometimes they feel almost tingly. But today however, I have had a constant pressure-type headache on my right side….could I have a tumor ( I haven’t had any head scans done, and I don’t think it is a possibility) ??? PLZ RESPOND!!!!
Oh and I’ve had a little bit of vertigo….AHHH!!!! PLZ RESPOND!!!!!!!
