Will drinking Chamomile Tea help relax my muscle tension and spasms?

Dan asked:

I have mild Cerebral Palsy. I’ve heard chamomile tea is an antispasmodic and can relieve muscle spasms. Is this true for the stomach and intestines only or can it also help with my muscle tension and spasms in other parts of the body as well?

  1. Buy Fioricet, Buy Soma

The Herb Goddess has some wonderful suggestions, and I agree that chamomile won’t be strong enough for this condition. I would add to her list cramp bark and wild lettuce.

As for the stomach and intestinal tract, think marshmallow root or Curing Pills.

While Chamomile does help to ease muscular spasms, it is rather mild, and I do not believe it is the best herb for your condition.

Scullcap has a delicious relaxing effect to the nerves, and senses. Unlike herbs such as Chamomile, Valerian, and Passionflower that may offer some degree of temporary relief, Scullcap actually helps to nourish, tone and repair damaged nerves over time. So, the longer you take it, the greater the lasting effects.

Oatstraw is another wonderful nerve tonic that is best suited to regular, long term use.

So, I would suggest taking a combination of Oatsraw and Scullcap either in tea or tincture 3 times a day for at least 3 months for long term maintenance.

On top of that, you may have need for something a little stronger at times. Kava kava is so incredibly calming to the nerves and muscles, but may make you a little drowsy at high doses. This is one of my favorite herbs. Just don’t be alarmed if your tongue or mouth get as little numb, this is perfectly normal.

Lady’s Slipper Orchid root, is almost a pure nervine, and can work wonders with spasms, although it can be difficult to find, since it is an endangered species.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or just to let me know if you try any of these, and how they work for you.

Chamomile tea is really good for soothing jangled nerves and relaxing and calming you down. It will also help manage gastrointestinal problems including mild tummy cramps, wind, bloating and inflamed stomach lining.

Rosemary, marjoram and lavender will help to ease sore muscles….. Mix 3 tablespoons of each of dried rosemary, mrajoram and lavender. Place the mixture in a double layer of muslin or simply just a face washer wrapped around the herbs and tie with a string and toss into the bath as the tub is filling. or simply tie to the faucet so as it connects with the flow of the water …….. then simply lay back and luxuriate for 15 – 20 mins!! Enjoy.

It is possible that it will help. I know that it helps relax the body when I have tight muscles, though I don’t know if this is true for everyone.
