Tooth Pain Remedies

The severity of a toothache can range from mild to chronic and excruciating. The pain may be aggravated by chewing or by extreme cold or heat. A thorough oral examination, including dental x-rays, can help determine the cause, whether the toothache is coming from a tooth or a jaw problem.

The best cure for tooth pain is to remove its cause through regular dental checkups. • Put a couple of cloves between your aching tooth and your cheek and hold it there like a person would with chewing tobacco. Allow the hard, seed-like cloves to soak in your saliva for several minutes to soften them up and then gently gnaw on them like you would a toothpick. The soothing oils of the cloves are released into the area surrounding your aching tooth, relieving the pain. Allow the cloves to sit for about 30 minutes or until the pain subsides. You can continue this treatment as often as necessary until you get in to see the dentist.

Take 200 milligrams of ibuprofen (motrin) every four hours. This pain reliever is also a great anti-inflammatory that is easier on the stomach than aspirin.

• Take 500 milligrams of calcium and 200 to 300 milligrams of magnesium at the first signs of a toothache. These minerals can help soothe nerves and temporarily ease tooth pain. Check with your doctor before taking magnesium supplements if you have any heart or kidney problems.

Another method is with asafetida and lemon juice. Apply to the cavity of the problematic tooth and gum -it will quickly relieve the teeth ahce. For people with prior history of teeth pain, you should refrain from using sour foods that include lemon juice, oranges and lime because it will create more irritation to the achy tooth.

Just as there are many reasons your tooth or teeth might hurt, there are numerous remedies available that do not necessarily require a dentist visit. If you practice good oral hygiene on a regular basis and your tooth is not “killing you,” you may want to consider alternative means of tooth pain relief before you plunk down a big chunk of change and a whole lot of time at the dental office.
