Anxiety Medication – Use

December 3rd, 2010
Jack Mason asked:

Anxiety medicine is easily the most popularly prescribed medicine for all of the psychiatric disorders. In recent years, the most commonly prescribed tension medicines have included the benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Valium, Librium, Tranxene, Klonopin, Centrax, Ativan and Serax. Other drugs fall within the anxiety medication classification, and are used for varied uneasiness disorders such as Busbar, Nuerontin and the Beta Blockers.

Anxiety Medication: Benzodiazepines

The benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium etc ) are simply the most usually prescribed of the agitation medicines, followed by chlordiazepoxide ( Librium, Librax ). Clonazepam (Klonopin) also falls inside this class, although it was originally used basically to treat seizures. Benzodiazepines are usually comparatively fast-acting medications and may take effect inside an hour or less. Typically doses are started at a low level and increased until symptoms are reduced. While they have relatively few side-effects, the most typical side-effects are fatigue, loss of coordination, fatigue, and psychological slowing or confusion. Clearly they’ll be taken with caution during pregnancy, when driving cars and operating machinery. Also, benzodiazepines shouldn’t be combined with other medications including our alcohol, anesthetics, muscle relaxants and prescribed pain medications.

Benzodiazepines are spotted to be an anxiety medicine with potential for the development of toleration, reliance, potential for abuse and withdrawal reactions. They are sometimes prescribed for brief periods of time due to these concerns, and are optimally advocated to be used for several days/weeks. On-going, continuing treatment with benzodiazepines isn’t suggested for most individuals, however some patients may need long term treatment. You should usually visit your doctor before dropping benzodiazepines and should never stop abruptly. Withdrawal pains may occur upon discontinuing these medications, and may include anxiety, shakiness, headache, woozy spells, sleeplessness, loss of appetite and in grim cases, fever, fits and psychosis. Generally, when benzodiazapines have been taken for an extended period of time, the dose is continuously chiseled off then was totally stopped.

Benzodiazepines have been used for a variety of anxiousness disorders including generalized uneasiness disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Other hysteria Medications:

While benzodiazepines make up the biggest majority of prescriptions for the varied foreboding disorders, other medications such as Busbar ( buspirone ), Neurontin (Gabapentin), the beta-blockers (propranolol, atenolol), tricyclic anti-depression drugs, MAOI’s and SSRIs are often prescribed for explicit foreboding conditions. The non-benzodiazepine busbar is sometimes used for treating generalized anxiety disorders. It is chemically similar to some of the anti-depression drugs, but luckily, does not have the dependence and negative withdrawal problems often related to the benzodiazepines. Neurontin is a medicine basically used to treat fits, which also has been found to be effective in treating some of the mood and tension disorders, as well as in treating neuropathic agony. Beta-blockers are used essentially for heart conditions (such as high blood pressure ), but are also useful for stage fright and other uneasiness conditions which include a palpitating heart. Anti-depressants like the tricyclics, SSRIs and MAOI’s are also often used to treat foreboding disorders, but will be debated on other pages of this web site.
